cupcakes and champagne

earlier this month, amid all the rain that was making london a very miserable place to be, i had a moment of decadence, courtesy of the new front room at flemings hotel in mayfair.

flemings hotel is tucked away on a quiet mayfair street and housed in some beautiful georgian buildings. it’s the sort of place you stay if you don’t want to make a fuss about where you’re staying but you do want to be made a fuss of. it’s also home to a new and very lovely champagne and cupcakes bar aka the front room.

david and i were invited to visit the front room to see if the promise of “something scandalous and naughty about this decadent high socie-tea room” was lived up to.

the décor is glamorous and over the top. the cupcakes, courtesy of the primrose bakery looked beautiful and, if you are a fan of acres of buttercream, just wonderful. the tea is provided by dammann frères tea, a french brand that i hadn’t tried before but would definitely buy myself, as it’s a real step up from some of the more widely available brands. and if you’d prefer alcoholic refreshment, there is promise of a savoury martini afternoon tea, or you could stick to the perrier jouet and cakes.

we had a lovely afternoon at flemings and if you’re looking for somewhere that will make you feel glamorous and cocooned from london’s grey days this is definitely worth checking out. the front room will open in january, booking essential.
